bizipoza tours

The Basque Country is incredibly beautiful and has a lot to offer the visitor. Why hurry your experience and enjoyment of it? Explore its hidden corners in the company of a donkey.

All of our treks are easily adaptable to your particular interests and abilities. A typical day trek takes between four and six hours and we cover around 10km. The pace is slow and we stop frequently to take in the views, observe wildlife and even visit a cave. Trekking with donkeys is very motivating for children as the donkeys are fun to be with and they go slowly. If anyone gets tired they can ride. The donkeys will carry a passenger of up to 45Kg. Lunch carried by the donkeys, comprises locally sourced, organically produced food and a bottle of Rioja.

We also offer trips down "The Vasco Navarro Cycle Way" in our covered wagon. This trip is fun for all ages but really ideal for younger travellers and all are welcome to take a turn at driving. Half day, full day and even overnight treks available.

Donkeys are real characters and an overnight trip enables you to get to know them at greater depth. They will happily carry around 40 Kg each, which is a lot more than you would normally carry into the hills on a camping trip. You can therefore afford to take a few luxuries, a bottle of wine or two and better food for example.

The team will happily cover 20 Km a day. There are innumerable routes leaving from Leorza and we can overnight in mountain refuges, caves, tents and even hammocks in the trees!

We are situated near the GR120 “Camino San Ignaciano” and the GR39 “Ruta de Vino y Pescado” and we are happy to organise trips along these trails too. The donkeys are equipped with very reliable pack saddles which can be loaded with just about any type of backpack. We can also provide tents, hammocks and cooking kit.

Donkeys are a kind of time machine. They only go backwards in time and that slowly.

A journey with donkeys

Thanks to “airbnb” I enjoy a steady current of itinerant travellers who stop for a while in my house and tell me their tales of travel and adventure. I get all sorts of folk, from all corners of the globe. Solo, couple and families with kids. They are all without exception, good people. They almost […]

Becoming a donkey owner

Me and Mr Momo I live in a place where believe it or not, donkeys frequently crop up in conversations. People in bars talk of donkeys seeking homes much as folk in other parts try to find homes for litters of kittens. In this way some friends who live in a nearby village got […]
