About us

Bizipozatours was founded in 2009 by Phil Miller and Basharat Khan.  Our aim is to sustain cultural diversity by promoting the “wee” countries through a philosophy of sustainable tourism.  By “sustainable tourism” we refer to the notion of connecting visitors to an authentic experience of Basque and Scottish cultures.  We collaborate with local small-businesses, and promote interest in and thereby maintain local culture and traditions.  Our tours involve a minimum of drive time and wherever possible we collaborate with accommodation providers interested in sustainable energy.  For example the agroturismo Guikuri is carbon neutral resourcing most of its energy needs through geothermal energy.

Phil was born in Edinburgh and studied microbiology at the University of Aberdeen where he attained a PhD. in medical mycology in 1993.  Since then his passion for mountaineering has led him to many remote parts.  He has lived, traveled and worked in Arctic Norway, the alps, Peru, Bolivia, Zimbabwe and Portugal.  In 1999 he fell in love with Euskal Herria and he has ten years experience providing English language summer camps in Scotland for young Basques.

Basharat Khan is a Scottish filmmaker and photographer who runs his own production company bashartcreative.  He has worked with various clients including the BBC, Diversity Films, Glasgow Media Access Centre, Kudos and Future State Productions to name a few.Basharat studied photography and film in Glasgow and he is passionate about documenting people and cultures.  He has been actively involved in video education with a cross section of the community and passionately believes in the power of film and story telling to promote understanding between cultures.  He has extensive experience in running film making workshops in Scotland and Spain and aims to connect them both through The Bizipoza Film School.

Basharat was introduced to the Basque country in 2007 while running filmmaking workshops with young people.  He instantly fell in love with the place and has been coming back every year to pursue creative projects.

Through these visits and the realisation that the Basque country and its curious traditions are practically unknown in Europe at large, he was compelled to set up the Bizipoza film school.

The aim is simple - to promote cultural awareness and inter cultural dialogue between Euskal Herria, Scotland and beyond through film.

In the coming year Bash will be working with partners from Portugal, France and Italy on a European Leonardo project which aims to explore the role of video as an educational tool. We intend to get Basque voices involved in this projects too. If you work with an NGO, youth group or in vocational training and would like to get involved please contact us.

Through the combined services of Bizipozatours we hope to deepen your awareness of the cultural wealth to be found close at hand and thereby to sustain a more colourful world.
